Welcome,
Teaching is one of the most important responsibilities of college and university faculty, yet they receive little to no training on how to be effective and engaging teachers. In an effort to foster teaching excellence in the health and social sciences, the CHSS Teaching Academy has developed a virtual teaching resource center dedicated to sharing resources that enhance teaching effectiveness and promote optimal faculty performance and student success.
The CHSS Teaching Academy Virtual Resource Center is meant to serve as a supplement to what the Center for Equity and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CEETL) offers CHSS faculty at SF State. As you will discover, it includes a variety of resource materials intended to assist faculty members at all ranks – from graduate teaching assistants to professors – in developing and honing their teaching skills.
The Virtual Resource Center will evolve over time to include an even broader array of resource materials and services. Some of the resources that will be available include:
- Podcast interviews with CHSS faculty members focused on how they incorporate equity and social justice into their teaching
- Annotated lists of books, articles, and other print material that focus on effective teaching
- Tools to enhance teaching effectiveness
- Archive of past workshops sponsored by the CHSS Teaching Academy
- Ask A Teacher Advice Column
The main impetus for creating an online teaching resource center—based largely on principles of social justice—is to offer practical support and guidance that helps faculty members become exceptional teachers. We hope you will find these teaching resources to be helpful and wish you the best as you embark on your journey toward teaching excellence. The mission of the CHSS Teaching Academy is to support CHSS teachers at all ranks and levels of experience (graduate teaching assistants, instructional aides, lecturer faculty and tenured/tenure track faculty members), and to foster a communal culture of reflective, inclusive, and intentional teaching practices. These practices are aimed at creating CHSS teaching that is accessible, community-engaged, and informed by social justice pedagogy.
To this end, the CHSS Teaching Academy will:
- Cultivate faculty engagement, retention, and a sense of belonging within CHSS through teaching and learning
- Promote student engagement, retention, and a sense of belonging within CHSS through teaching and learning
- Develop a repository of resources and a sustainable structure to support inclusive and equitable teaching practices
- Develop systems by which critically engaged, inclusive excellence in teaching is deeply valued and supported by the CHSS community
