This art exhibition is a final class art project. It will be exhibited in LIB 286 on November 30, 12 noon–6 p.m. All students, faculty and staff are welcome to observe the process of impressive sand paintings/mandalas.

Tibetan sand mandalas are a mesmerizing ancient art form, crafted grain by grain, and it holds deep spiritual significance. Often sand paintings are created as a form of meditation and spiritual arts that cultivate a sense of inner tranquility. Once complete, mandalas are dismantled and symbolize impermanence, teaching us to embrace life's transient nature. Don’t miss the sand mandala dissolution process at 5 p.m.

Students will also have the opportunity to witness a process of the impressive sand mandalas and practice meditation to release their stress before Finals Week.

Lecturer Lobsang Tsering is a former Tibetan Buddhist monk and practitioner of Tibetan arts and culture. With a lifetime of experience in the field, he brings a wealth of knowledge and deep spiritual connection to the art of sand painting to SF State and his students. Under his guidance, students will have not only gained new technical skills but also developed a profound understanding of the cultural and spiritual significance of their creations.

The sand painting exhibition promises to be a transformative experience for all who attend. Students have poured their hearts and souls into these creations, inviting visitors to embark on a journey of spiritual and artistic discovery. Don't miss this rare opportunity to witness the art of spirituality and culture.

Tags

Holistic Health

Tue, 10 Oct 2023 21:57:26 +0000 Michael Broder 281 at https://chss.sfsu.edu From Polarization to Integration: A New Vision of Health, Activism & Cultural Evolution https://chss.sfsu.edu/event/polarization-integration-new-vision-health-activism-cultural-evolution

Friday, April 21, 2023

Event Time 09:30 a.m. - 05:00 p.m. PT

Cost

Location LIB 121 or via Zoom

Contact Email kburrows@sfsu.edu

Overview

The Institute for Holistic Health Studies invites students, faculty and community “Thought Leaders” for a collective “Think Tank” (new type of conference) to explore some of the core issues of our time.

Welcome to our collective crisis... to an emerging society unable to solve its mounting problems and seemingly incapable of civil discourse. This ultimate crisis is not economic, or environmental, it’s imaginal (mental) and social, fed by unacknowledged assumptions, and polarized beliefs that act as filters shaping what we see and don’t see. This imaginal crisis is also fed by today’s media system — with our gloomy post-truth predicament and its ongoing display of threat and terror in news headlines that contribute to a cycle of helplessness, cynicism and social disengagement.

This conference will focus on answering a key question:

Which thoughts, beliefs and conditions bring out the worst in us, and which bring out our best?

What supports the human mind tilting toward dualistic (polarized) thinking (i.e. narrowed perception, fixated thinking and reactive behavior) vs. integrative thinking, which is associated with the capacity for discovery, creativity, collaboration and well-being?

The conference will emphasize five reflective topics and practices to foster integrative thinking:

New Mind, New World—The Life-Changing Shift: Dualistic to Holistic Thinking

Media Awareness: Finding Trustworthy News in an Era of Censorship and Misinformation

Art, Artists and Awakening Possibility

Seeking Social Justice: Culture Wars and Cultural Healing

Cross-Cultural (Community) Dialogue

Join us and explore alternatives in how we think and relate to each other — to create the world we want.

Also note events leading up to the conference, as part of National Week of Conversation: April 17-23

Participate and help our society transform division and contempt into connection and understanding.

Host: The Institute for Holistic Health Studies

Faculty contact: Kenn Burrows

Information: Department of Recreation, Parks & Tourism, HSS 307

No cost for this event. Save the date!
